Today in Southern Labor History in 1938, the Fair Labor Standards Act became law, setting the first federal minimum wage (25¢!), creating overtime pay, a 40-hour workweek, and banning child labor. But it also left out millions of Black and Brown workers — farmworkers, domestic workers, and tipped workers — excluded by design to preserve Jim Crow’s racist economy. The FLSA shows us how far we’ve come and how far we still have to go. We’re still fighting for fair wages and dignity for every worker
